In this class, students will learn and practice leadership skills that will equip and empower communities toward sustainable ministries.Skills we will learn and practice:
- Learn Conversational Intelligence and the theology of Asset Based Community Development as the basis for Adaptive Leadership.
- Learn your community’s identity and how they communicate and learn.
- Learn what is sustainable ministry.
- Practice and Teach Conversational Intelligence with individuals, small groups and large gatherings.
- Create atmospheres for listening and learning within diversity.
- Equip and empower the community to create sustainable ministries.
September
- Theology of Asset Based Community Development/Cultural Intelligence and Conversational Intelligence
- Assign a class project- each student will go into a community in order to listen and learn their community’s identity and language of discipleship
- Research and discern their project (20 hours) in order to present their research in the October classes– Student will practice adaptive leadership through each presentation of classmates project

During the October class sessions students will:
- Present their project
- Discuss the specific context of each project
- Discern as a class what adaptive leadership skills have been applied or needed in each project
- Establish next steps toward sustainable ministry
- Assess the tools and resources needed to begin sustainable ministry with each student’s presentation

Rev. Maria King is an ICF Executive Coach, Adaptive Leadership Consultant, and Community Developer. She was trained by the Asset Based Community Development Institute to develop authentic engagement and partnerships between stakeholders and the larger community. She has led communities to develop: community skate parks, GED programs, food justice systems, and health education initiatives, medical clinics in US and Honduras, and ecumenical community alliances for racial and religious restorative partnerships. As an Executive Coach, she works with diverse individuals, teams, and groups on adaptive leadership toward sustainable change. Currently, she is an Ordained Elder with the UMC and is serving as a Vitality Strategist for the Triad area in the United Methodist Church. In this role, she is empowering congregations toward building and nurturing relationships to be in genuine partnership with their communities’ hopes, dreams, and sustainability. She leads training for clergy, laity, and community leaders in community development, cultural intelligence, and community leadership. She also co-created and developed Schools of Truth and Reconciliation and Spiritual Direction.
